About Sous La Terre

Sous la terre translates to “underground”–-secret, hidden, away from public view. The perfect ambiance for an intimate meal.

“I don’t have the capital, business know-how, or food industry experience to finance a real brick-and-mortar restaurant, so I am going to resort to a much simpler idea: I plan to invite guests to my own home and cook for them, out of my own kitchen, with extraordinary products from the Bay Area and the Napa Valley that inspire and challenge me. I feel that this approach to food is, by far, the best there is; it allows me to share my culinary fascination with people who enjoy great food, amazing wine, and hospitable company.”

Put into motion by JR Palileo as a personal project, Sous La Terre aims to bring both friends and perfect strangers to the same table, all unified by the same notion: the hunger for a perfect meal. Integrating both classical and progressive techniques, Sous La Terre embraces a style of New American cuisine that focuses on comfort and balance, while pushing the limit with innovation and creativity.

The format of Sous La Terre is ad hoc: completely unplanned, with very little notice in advance. Open only once every few weeks, reservations at Sous La Terre are extremely limited.
